I have been waiting for over a month to share our bathroom renovation with you all! After two months of no upstairs bathroom and no bathtub for our little ones, our dream bathroom is finally complete.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with our home story, we purchased our historic 1931 home over two years ago. As soon as we walked into the house we fell in love. To be clear – we fell in love with the home (location, charm and potential) not with the style that the previous owners had implemented. No offense to that family… we just had a different vision.
When we moved in, we immediately got to work on that vision. Some things, like interior painting and replacing carpet, happened right away. Other things, like this bathroom renovation, we wanted to wait on so we knew exactly what we wanted before moving forward.
One of the things that we have always loved about this house is its character. We love all of the trim, original hardwood floors, glass doorknobs, fireplace, etc. All of the original charm is what sold us. When it came to this bathroom we knew we wanted to restore the historical integrity.
Here’s what the bathroom looked like when we moved it:
Here’s what it looked like after we moved in but before the reno:
It was very clear that this bathroom had been updated, likely, in the 90’s. The functionality was fine but what you can’t see is a very outdated jetted tub (no way to keep those bad boys clean… ick). There was also nothing about this bathroom that was true to the time period of the house.
We started demo on May 1st and what we found was so exciting!
We found that the previous owners had tiled over the original tile! While it was ridiculous to think that they had tiled over existing tile, it was also insane to think that someone had intentionally covered up that unique and historic floor! Sadly, we were unable to keep it because of some plumbing that needed to be addressed and the need to level the floor BUT at least we had confirmation that we had chosen a tile that was very close to the original.
Here is what it looks like now:
We kept the same cabinets because the layout was already great for our family and the size of the space. They were also in perfect shape (not to mention updating the existing ones was a huge savings to our budget).
We removed all hardware, sanded, primed and painted the cabinets before reinstalling them. They look brand new!
We chose a white quartz counter top for the clean look and longevity. It doesn’t stain like marble but you still get the classic look. It’s easy to clean and so far we’ve loved it.
The bathtub was a great change – it’s so much easier to bathe the kiddos because it’s not so insanely deep compared to the old jetted tub. It’s also SO much easier to keep clean. The subway tile is actually not tile at all! We chose an Onyx surround that looks like subway tile but it’s better! It has a lifetime guarantee and doesn’t require any re-grouting or maintenance! This was Max’s idea and I have to say it was a really good one.
We replaced the toilet while we were at it and purchased one with a soft close lid. Best idea that I didn’t even realize was amazing until it was installed. So smart with kids who don’t give a crap about how loud a toilet lid can be when their siblings are sleeping. 😉
Last, but certainly not least: the tile. So in love. Not only is it time period appropriate for this house, it’s also so stinkin’ adorable. It’s different but classic. So happy with how it tied this entire room together.
I’ve linked all of the details below in case you’re working on bathroom/home projects of your own. I have several more rooms to share in the coming months – we’ve been busy! It’s been such a fun process making this home our own and we’re just about finished with our wish list. Let me know what you think of the transformation and which room of our house you would like to see next!
