I’ve been getting some questions lately about how I accomplish my wavy curls. Let me just start by saying I’m no expert – there has been a LOT of trial and error. And I mean a LOT.
In full transparency, I wish I would have done a video to actually show you how I do it because that would be so much easier for you all. But I didn’t have quite enough time to execute one {hubby is knee deep in basketball season so things are crazy around here!} so that’s on my to-do list for the near future.
I will walk through my entire hair routine so you have an idea of how I get those soft waves. At the bottom of this post I have linked all of the products I use!
First of all: I only wash my hair every four days. Back in my high school and college days I would wash my hair every single day. Well I quickly learned that this was one of the contributing factors behind why my hair wouldn’t grow much past my shoulders. It took quite a few weeks of me looking close to homeless but I was able to train my hair how to go several days without washing.
The day I wash my hair {we will refer to this as Day 1}, I blow dry my hair to nearly dry. I don’t dry it all of the way… mostly because I’m lazy. 😉 That’s pretty much it! I may throw in a little shine serum but other than that I keep Day 1 pretty basic. My hair is naturally pretty straight so I don’t run a straightener through it and I would recommend that you don’t if you plan to add curl on Day 2.
On Day 2 I use my one-inch curling wand {that I’m obsessed with!} to add in the curl. With a wand you have to hang on to the end of your hair to wrap it around the barrel, so the tips of your hair end up with no curl. That’s pretty much the secret behind the wave: leaving out the ends of your hair.
Important: The secret to using a wand: hold it upside down. So the barrel of the curling wand is pointing down toward your body, not up toward the ceiling. Also make sure you wrap your hair around the barrel away from your face. The real key here is just a lot of practice. After I’ve curled all of my hair, I add some texture to my curls with a texture spray but I don’t use dry shampoo until Day 3.
Day 3 I brush out my hair before going back through and re-curling pieces that need some attention. I spray in some dry shampoo in at my roots, finish it with some hair spray and I’m done! I do want to point out that I have tried a TON of dry shampoos and I really love this one for brunettes. It doesn’t leave a white residue in your hair – love it.
Day 4 I do the exact same thing as I did during Day 3! As a busy mama: this routine saves me SO much time! And apparently it’s looking okay because I get a ton of compliments!
Afraid to move toward less hair washing? You have to just commit to it and give it a try. Things get weird as your hair gets used to it {make friends with a good dry shampoo} but once you’ve done it for several weeks to a month, it’s amazing. My hair is so much healthier and curl holds so much longer; not to mention that time savings I have in the morning. So worth it!
If you still have questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments below! I’m happy to answer them and I really do plan to do a video tutorial in the near future.
