School Year Closet Capsule

Not familiar with a closet capsule? Simply put: it’s a small collection of core pieces that work together to complete your wardrobe for a particular season. It’s often suggested that you choose 37 to 40 items (jackets, pants, jeans, skirts, shirts, tees, shoes) that can be combined in a variety of different ways to create different looks. The whole point is to get your closet down to what you really need. It also forces you to get creative when it comes to putting together new outfits. I set out to The Empire Mall to choose a few key pieces to add to your ‘school year closet capsule.’ I’ve found four workhorses that will complete just about any look.

1. Blazer

I chose the blazer pictured above because of the structure and the simple design. It’s perfect over a basic tee with jeans but would also be great paired with a pant or pencil skirt for the office. Every closet capsule needs a basic pant but for anyone who is knee-deep in the craziness of a school schedule, this piece is even more vital. Running around calls for solid work pants! 3. Lace Up Flat

If you follow Midwest In Style… you know by now how much I adore lace up flats. This particular color can go with anything. 4. Versatile Blouse

This is probably my favorite piece that I found to complete a school year closet capsule. A pretty blouse is so important for any capsule but I particularly love this one for the school year because it can be worn all year-long! You may think florals can only be worn in spring or summer months but this is just not so. This floral would be perfect for fall and winter as well! It can be dressed up or down.
