Finding shorts and swimwear that fit your body post college is, to put it politely, challenging. I can’t speak for all of you but so many of you have reached out to have this post be included in content here on Midwest In Style because it can be so difficult to find these summer staples for grown women.
Don’t get me wrong, if you can rock an itty-bitty bikini or those Daisy Duke shorts… girl, own it! I love that! But for me post-babies, I certainly don’t feel as comfortable in the same swimwear or short shorts that I wore pre-kids. That’s not even because of how my body changed; it’s mostly due to the level of modesty I have now that I’m a mom.
It all goes back to what you feel most comfortable and confident in because in the end that’s when you feel the best about yourself and the clothing you’re in.
I’ve done my research on the best approach to both warm weather pieces and in order to keep it as simple as possible I’ve come up with two shorts styles that I’ve had the most luck as well as sharing the swimwear brand that I’ve recently discovered that I’ve absolutely LOVED!
High-Waisted Tie Detail Shorts
Number one of the two shorts styles to flatter your figure and remain modest: the high-waisted tie detail shorts. I fell in love with these as soon as I saw them {stripes and under $40… duh! 😉 } and knew there would be so many ways to style them. I love dressing them up with a blazer for a bridal shower or date night. They would also look incredibly cute with a simple tank, like this one, for weekend activities.
The length on this style of shorts is typically long enough to make any woman feel comfortable that they’re not going to be riding up you-know-where. The mid to high-waisted rise is great for defining your waist line. Hour glass figure… check!

Boyfriend/Girlfriend Denim Shorts
Version number two of shorts made for grown ladies: the boyfriend or girlfriend short. I have found this style tends to fit the best: they’re not too tight and they’re just long enough without being too long.
While I can appreciate a knee-length short if done right, I also feel like most of them make your body/legs appear shorter. The midi length short should hit between your upper thigh and your knee. But you have to be careful because some midi shorts are skinny fit and those tend to make your thighs look larger than they really are.
Searching for ‘girlfriend’ or ‘boyfriend’ style keeps them loose and also achieves the length we want.

Swimwear for Women
Last but not least: the debut of my new favorite swimwear designer. It’s none other than Carrie Underwood. You read that correctly: Carrie Underwood’s CALIA brand’s is a god-send. CALIA also features workout gear {which I have not tried yet} but I’m telling you the swimsuit I bought this spring is by far the best one I’ve EVER purchased.
The padding is amazing {those girls aren’t moving!} and there are styles for every body shape & size. I found this one and have been wearing it like crazy. I plan to purchase a couple more because I love this brand that much.

This post was long overdue but I hope you’ve gained something valuable from it. It’s not always easy finding the perfect blend of fit, style and comfort but when you do find it… it’s sweet sweet summer bliss. 😉

Shorts are so hard! As for my legs: I was blessed with great genes from my dad but I have found a new love for squats/lunges 😉
Thanks for reading, Amanda!
