I had a conversation recently where I was asked, “How do you keep yourself from wanting everything you see other people wear or style on Instagram?! I find myself wanting so many new things because I see people with them and wish I had them too!”
First of all, this is a very real thing that everyone struggles with. Even if it’s not due to social media, we all find ourselves longing or wishing for things we don’t have. It’s part of human nature. I think it’s what we do with that energy that’s important.
My advice during this conversation was three fold. First off: detox your Instagram or social feeds. Unfollow people who make you feel inadequate or that don’t bring you joy. Secondly: keep in mind a lot of those social media “influencers” you’re following are gifted items or given significant discounts on products that aren’t necessarily attainable for the average person’s budget.
The third and final thought I shared was that we don’t have to take styling so literally. Take a look at what you actually love about a look that someone has put together. You control how you look at what you’re viewing; are you focusing on the fact that someone is styling a Gucci belt that is out of your price range or can you focus on that they’re styling a brown belt with a gold buckle that happens to be very similar to something you already have in your own closet?
Social media has definitely perpetuated consumerism. So if we change our mindset to look at what people are sharing on Instagram as outfit inspiration to give you ideas on how to recreate a look with things you already have in your own closet, you’ll find yourself gaining a new appreciation for pieces currently hanging in your wardrobe.
This conversation I am referencing was perfectly timed because I had already planned this “three ways to style” series! This series is meant to show you how far one classic wardrobe staple can take you. We all have a white button up… or even if you don’t, I’ve linked a very affordable one that I know you will love!
This week, I style the white button up shirt in a more casual way that is perfect for date night or a girls night out. This look is just the first of the three to inspire you to go play in your closet.
