If you know me personally, you know I’m an open book. I am an extrovert through and through. I am completely comfortable sharing anything and everything when it comes to things I love or recommend. The topic I’m covering in today’s blog post is no different.
I feel like cosmetic procedures are something that we, as Midwesterners, find a little taboo. But I’m happy to break that mold and share my love for Botox treatments. There’s no shame in my anti-aging game, friends. 😉 I’ve teamed up with Vivaz Medical Spa in Sioux Falls to share why I chose Botox and give you the tools to determine if it might be something for you as well!
A little background on how I came to love Botox: I got my first treatment a little over a year and a half ago at Vivaz Medical Spa. I had been told by friends who had tried it that I would love it. Honestly, at that time I thought I would try it just for fun. I had no real intention of continuing treatments even though I absolutely hated the number of wrinkles I was seeing around my eyes.
But after my first treatment at Vivaz, I was blown away by how quick and painless it was. I also felt so much more confident about the areas on my face where I had been seeing signs of aging (kids… don’t sit in tanning beds.)
I typically get Botox treatments in my forehead, in the creases between my eyebrows (what they call your “elevens”) and at my crows feet next to my eyes.
I’m very much of the mindset that people should make elective cosmetic decisions based on their comfort level and safety. I also fully support people who do things that make them feel more confident in how they look. For some it’s hair or eyelash extensions and for others it’s microbladed eyebrows; for me it’s Botox.
I’ve turned to the expert team at Vivaz Medical Spa to give you the rundown on Botox so you get an idea of the types of questions I asked before I decided to get this treatment.
If there are still questions you have after reviewing this blog post, please feel free to leave them in the comment section below and I will relay them to the Vivaz team so we can all learn together!
Holiday hint: a Vivaz Medical Spa gift card is a great gift idea, ladies!

How should you choose where to go for Botox?
It is important to receive treatments from a trained professional with experience. At Vivaz all injectables are completed by MDs or Nurse Practitioners. In addition, Vivaz is affiliated with Sanford Health holding us to very high standards of care/regulations/policies.
What is the “recovery” like?
There is really no ‘downtime’. Patients may experience a small amount of redness and swelling at areas of injection that typically resolves within 20-30 minutes. Bruising can occur and although minimal can take up to two weeks to resolve- be sure to complete injections at least two weeks or longer before any big events.
How long does it take to kick in?
It typically ‘kicks in’ in about three to five days however it can take up to two weeks to reach full effects.
What are the uses of Botox injections?
Botox helps to soften fine lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement- the most beneficial areas include forehead, between brow, and crows feet. In addition you can treat bunny lines, upper/lower lip, corners of mouth, chin, and neck.
Botox is also you for numerous medical conditions including underarm sweating, migraines, movement disorders, certain bladder conditions, etc.
Are there other types of “Botox?”
Yes! Botox is a type of neuromodulator. We also carry Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.
What are the side effects and are they common?
Side effects include redness, swelling, or bruising. Some redness and swelling is likely to occur but resolves in 20-30 minutes. Bruising can occur and although minimal takes up to two weeks to completely resolve. Certain medical conditions or medications can increase risk for bruising. You can help decrease your risk for bleeding by stopping use of NSAIDS (e.g Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, and Ibuprofen) and certain supplements such as Fish Oil and St. Johns Wort about a week prior to injection. However, do NOT stop any medications prescribed by your physician. In addition, avoiding alcohol consumption a few days prior to injection can also minimize risk.

What if you’re not pleased with the results?
We will always call you in two weeks to check in on your last treatment but never hesitate to call with questions or concerns. Client satisfaction (& of course safety) is our number one priority!
How long does it last?
The goal will be three months, however this can vary depending on numerous factors. Metabolism, activity level, history of neuromodulator use can all play a role.
Is it preventative?
Yes! It is much easier to prevent a problem (or in this case a wrinkle) than to treat one! People often wait stating their “wrinkles aren’t bad enough yet” however, once wrinkles become too deep they may never resolve (they will soften) even with Botox treatments.
Can you get Botox while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Botox is contraindicated while pregnant or breastfeeding as we cannot complete medical studies on this population.
Are there things you need to do to prep for the appointment?
Get your workout in before your appointment, avoid NSAIDS (as long as they are not prescribed by your provider) & certain supplements one week prior to treatment, and alcohol consumption a few days prior.
Are there things you can’t do after getting Botox?
Do not lie flat for four hours after treatment (to avoid any movement of product), avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours (may cause a less effective treatment), and do not press on areas of treatment (e.g. avoid wearing a baseball cap immediately after forehead injection).
