After our two-night stay in La Crosse, we continued on to our final destination: Wisconsin Dells. My fond memories of visiting the Dells was what motivated this vacation from the beginning. Even though Max had never been, this trip wasn’t a hard sell.
Wisconsin Dells is about five and a half hours from our home in Sioux Falls but since we broke up the drive by staying in La Crosse for a few days, we only had about an hour drive from La Crosse to our Airbnb.

WHERE TO EAT:
1.) High Rock Cafe: this was a fabulous spot for lunch (I’m sure it’s just as good for dinner). I highly recommend their crab cakes. We appreciated the large menu for the adults and the great options for our kids. The High Rock offers two floors of seating; we were seated on the top level which features a large corner window (pictured below) to look out over the main downtown drag. The side patio looked just as enjoyable!
2.) River Walk Pub: this restaurant & bar features a gorgeous patio that overlooks the Wisconsin River. We ordered a variety of appetizers to mix things up and everything was gone within minutes. After your meal, it is so easy to hop on the river walk to enjoy the scenery.
3.) The Keg Bar & Grill: this is definitely a popular place during the summer. Garage doors open during favorable weather and open up to an enormous patio space. With several sets of bean bag boards and Edison light bulbs strung overhead, it’s the perfect place to eat and recreate.
WHERE TO STAY:
Airbnb: Our Airbnb was large, clean and just a short drive from the hub of Wisconsin Dells. It was the perfect evening escape from the busy downtown area where we relaxed by the fire pit every night.
WHAT TO DO:
1.) The Original Wisconsin Ducks: while there were several things about my childhood trip to the Dells that I remember, this was the thing I most fondly remember. Our kids absolutely loved it and still say this was their favorite part of the trip. The best part about the Ducks is that even though I had done it as a kid, it was just as much fun for me to experience as an adult. The Ducks are a must if you’re going to Wisconsin Dells.
2.) Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park: Wisconsin Dells is known as the water park capital of the world so this is another staple. We wanted to make sure it was a fun experience for both our five year old and our two year old which I was worried would be a challenge. But Mt. Olympus was perfect. They have so many areas to choose from depending on who is enjoying the water park. The day we went was pretty overcast which made Blakely pretty chilly but it was just a quick walk inside to enjoy their huge indoor slide options! We were there for about four hours and the whole family had a blast.
3.) Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf: this was the perfect low-key but fun-filled activity that rounded out our trip. Pirate’s Cove offers a couple of different 18-hole mini-golf courses depending on your preferred difficulty level. We opted for the easiest course. Carsten and Max loved showing off their putting skills while Blakely and I did our best to keep up. 😉 We certainly shared a lot of laughs. This is a fabulous stop regardless of who you’re traveling with.
We hope you enjoy this video we put together featuring our family’s favorite Wisconsin Dells attractions! We loved everything about our stay and this certainly won’t be our last trip to the Dells.
